Introduction
Brief
Design a product to assist Alvin in waking up early by
preventing him from hitting the snooze button repeatedly.

Concept
In order to access their alarm, the user must wake up
and be fully awake. He must get out of bed and solve the
puzzle to stop the alarm.

Research & Isolation
Research on the Cause
To help him, firstly, I did some research into why people struggle waking up in the morning.
This is due to a condition called “brain fog”, which is a condition that makes someone unaware
of them turning off their alarms. According to some studies this condition lasts on average
for 3 min, in which period the study participants had the biggest loss of cognitive function
restored.

Market Research
On the market, there are time locking containers. They all have a timer that doesn’t let you
reach the phone until the timer doesn’t run out. We wanted to make something that would be
accessible anytime so that in case of emergency, the container could be opened.

Solution
We aimed to design a device that would force the user to fully wake up in order to silence the
alarm. The idea was to create a puzzle that required getting out of bed and solving it, which
would take just a few minutes to complete. This would help ensure that the person is fully
awake before the alarm is silenced.

The Technology behind the concept
I came up with a mechanism that involved the use of two brass rods, which needed to be precisely
aligned with their corresponding slots to unlock the box. This mechanism relied on the principles
of centrifugal force, where the rods were pushed to the ends of the slots by the force, allowing
the box to be unlocked.
